OK, OK I admit it, I am one of those people that buy homemade desserts and then adds homemade whip cream to make them look better and impress my guests. I actually am guilty because I have the reputation of being a “great cook” among my circle of friends, and sometimes I don’t admit when things are store bought. However, lately everyone keeps asking me for “my recipes” so I had to fess up over the holidays and admit some of my work was “Trader Joe’s specialties” and not my own.
Then this week I had “girls night” at my house and I actually made my own Chicken salad (Its made with ramen noodles-but yummy). I was excited when my friends asked for the recipe because I actually had a little stained recipe card to pass around. Now the problem was that one of my girlfriends had to make a big deal and say, “No wonder this salad is so good, it has a stick of butter in it!” You can’t win! I served an equally fattening dessert, said I lost the recipe, and called it a night! These cooking white lies reminded me of the first time I signed up for Dream Dinners (dream dinners.com) and my husband asked me how I made this delicious chicken dish? I proudly said “oh I just threw some stuff together”. He may have figured it out… because I never made it again. Anyway, I this month I just signed up to do Dream Dinners because we are expecting our third child and I know I will NOT want to be cooking, or even faking that I am cooking. I think Dream Dinners is really convenient because you go there and pre-assemble a full month of dinners (and they are much healthier than my fake desserts and the salads made with sticks of butter), bag them into freezer bags, and then presto-there’s dinner! I totally recommend it for a month when you have just moved, are having a baby, or just had enough of military life and don’t want to think about what to make for dinner! In New England we can’t grill in the winter and I seriously can’t think of what to make most nights-even when I am not about to have a baby. I think its great because in just two hours you prepare entrees for the whole month and I say its worth the splurge. I am curious if any other spouses have tried it out if there is one in your area? One of my clients from Texas said they didn’t have any by her but she said she took a Sunday once a month and pre-prepared her own homemade version to make the month easier. Hey, maybe they will have that chicken dish again and I can tell my hubby I thought of what it was that I threw in that “great chicken dish”!

I discovered the neat trick of doctoring food during a playgroup. The woman hosting made Rice Krispie Treats. I remarked about how perfectly alike they all were, then said something about how I haven’t made them in a while. She snorted and introduced me to packaged foods, cut in half for the kiddoes, then arranged nicely on a platter. After that, I enjoyed seeing what she was going to serve and stealing her ideas!!
Have to love Trader Joe’s! That store is a lifesaver especially around the holidays when stress is high and time is short!
We have a place like that here in Bloomington, Indiana. But with 4 kids and 2 adults it is way out of my price range. Personally im all about like my left overs or starve..LOL
