There are a lot of worldly milspouses out there. When it comes to food, I am not one of them. I grew up in southern New Mexico, where I don’t even think there was a seafood restaurant in town. So…having sushi or anything similar like a bright red piece of tuna is not something I would normally try. On Saturday, I went to dinner as part of a birthday celebration for a friend (who picked the restaurant, Sekisui).
In the spirit of trying to be adventurous and heck what if I ever want to be on the Amazing Race, I decided to try a tiny piece of raw tuna for the first time.
Without sauce, the raw tuna really didn’t taste like anything special. After some sauce, it actually wasn’t too bad.
I also had cauliflower tempura!? which was interesting.
I also forced myself to eat with chopsticks….which was also difficult, but fun.
Trying new things is something that can be scary and in the case of food….might make you sick….but I have to say in this instance, it really wasn’t all that bad. It was better than the spinach my mom would force me to eat when I was kid thats for sure!

Yeah, someone tried something new and different food wise. Not knowing where you live or had the tuna, the thing to bear in mind is that a lot of sushi houses and restaurants are now using a frozen “sushi” grade tuna. While it can be a really nice product when grilled, or seared, it is nowhere near what fresh tuna tastes like, it also costs about a 1/3 of the price of fresh. The really big one is Sea urchin roe or “uni” which when fresh is like eating a cream butter (texture), that tastes and smells like the ocean. However, if its not fresh, it can be like eating butter that smells a lot like a litter box that really needs to be changed. The really great thing about Japanese food, is it tends to be very clean, and simple, not a lot in the way of sauces, and the condiments are enhancements. One very important note though, all tuna, fresh, frozen or canned is high in mercury and pregnant, nursing woman, and children should really avoid it. Check out this site:

Hey Wendy, I am a big fan of trying new things especially from different cultures. However, Sushi is something I keep on my agenda very few and far between! It is “Just OK!” in my book! Glad you worked up the bravery to try it though! It is quite the “Adventure” to say the least!
