I run an organization called Soldier’s List. It is responsible for making sure that Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines have the support that they need while being deployed as well as at home. Recently, I’ve encountered quite a few questions about what should be put in care packages and I thought it might be helpful to have a blog where ladies and gentlemen can add their thoughts.
My general rule of thumb is that care packages should be personalized and appropriate. If you are sending to a Sailor, the package will look very different compared to that sent to a Marine currently in the desert. Obviously, no live ammo or small pets, please.
I will begin a list of staples and I encourage others to add to it so we can give people ideas.
toiletries (for the desert folk: baby wipes, eye drops, hand sanitizers, etc.)
magazines
newspaper cuttings of current events, funny articles, comics, hometown heroes, etc.
paper/pens/pencils/colored pencils/coloring books
cake in a can (already baked, but sealed for your Service Member to open on a special occasion)
hard candy/jerky/Twizzlers/powdered drinks
DVDs/CDs
And….I’ll let you all take it…
Over and out…

hand held games these are great for when internet is down, batteries, any type of sports ball, playing cards, record favorite shows and send them as a dvd, socks, gum (blister packs)trail mix, drink mixes, tuna in the vac pack (it’s lighter than cans) sunscreen, dental care, anti-perspirant,lotion, chap stick, calling cards, spritz his or her favorite frangrance on a pillowcase put it in ziploc to maintain scent, put popcorn in ziploc’s and use to cushion contents.
The popcorn in ziploc bags to use for cushion is a great idea…thanks for sharing!
Just curious! Does you organization have a web address. I would love to check it out if you do! Great info on here BTW! I like how you mentioned different packages for different branches. That is so true! Thanks Chelle!
I myself would want a big fluffy towel, and a nice soft blanket! One gal in our FRG sent her husband a bread maker!
OK a couple more…
Battery operated mini fans
Bandana’s you get wet that stay cold for hours, mini Bible verses to carry in their pockets, pics from home, newspapers, comic strips, magazines. LOTS OF LOVE!!!
I recently received word that if you send a “group package” for an entire group of Soldiers, they are always running low on coffee, sugar, creamer, etc.
Also, those insulated travel mugs are great gifts that they can keep the remainder of the deployment and use daily.
Crossword puzzles and puzzle books are good ways to pass the time too!
Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner. My daughter is not doing well and we had to rush her to the hospital because of her heart issues.
In response to your question about a webpage- no, I don’t currently have one because I am an idiot when it comes to computers. I am working with my friend to develop a site and I will post it when it’s done.
Thanks for all the great ideas! Keep ‘em coming and I will try to check back really soon.
God be with your daughter and your family. Love, Hugs and Encouragement to you.
