I'm from Northern Maine...and if it's any consolation, (with this winter being the exception) it usually doesn't snow much in Bangor or south. Of course, most of the state thinks that Bangor is "up North"...when in reality, there are another 5 hours of driving time to get REALLY up north. And the world ends at Bangor. Once, when I was in Southern Maine for a track meet, someone actually asked me how we got there....I told them "Dogsled to Bangor, then we rented a bus". Another asked if we had running water...they were told "we diverted a stream thru the kitchen floor".

I would go to Maine in a heartbeat. Bangor would be only 2 hours from my mom. And snow. And skiing. And AMAZINGLY gorgeous falls. Be sure to visit Baxter State Park and Mt. Katahdin in the summer time. Mt. Katahdin is the first point on the East Coast to see the sun rise. And it is a beautiful end to the Appalachian Trail.

And should you get an inkling to travel north, take the scenic route...Route 1. Follow it all the way to the end, in Ft. Kent, ME. If you've been to Key West (and I'd hope that you have, since you're in FL), you would be able to say you've been to both ends. My hometown is on Route 1, about 20 miles east of Ft. Kent. It's the "northern most populated point in Maine"...Madawaska. Small town...sad...but again, beautiful up there. Lots of lakes and fishing and hunting. New things to learn and do.

I wish I were you. You could come to Manhattan, KS instead.

Ah, and the true indication that you are indeed a military wife is that you can find the laughter even in this!

Here's to shoveling and warm yummies for your tummy...

Be VERY careful up there. It's not America as we know it.

Click my name and take some time to read. It may save you a lot of grief later on. (I wish someone had warned me)

You can start here, and Good Luck!

(Incidentally, the nearest decent skiing is about 2 hours away.)

LOL! Scotch? yeah, that would keep you warm for sure! A drastic change from beers though! ;) I feel your pain. My hubby and I are a few steps behind you guys with the whole "New Orders" deal! ICK! I think what drives me crazy is the not knowing part. If I just knew then I could start my lists of lists! AAHHH, the insanity will it end? I think not!

Dustin has to be in Maine by October. Still unsure when the boys and I will go up.

Yes, I've already decided that my "cold beers on the hot driveway" won't fly in Bangor. I might have to switch to Scotch or something similar to warm my tummy.

But, really, I am starting to get excited.

Except, after 5 years here in Pensacola, this will be one of the hardest places we've ever had to leave....if only because we had actually made some roots! Imagine that!

My friend, let's not forget that I finally have a place where I can go ski with friends. I personally am counting the days...when do you rotate again?? :-))

Ski parka? Check. Skis? Check. Jack Daniels for me and Sarah? Check. Protective helmets for the menfolk? Check. Six crazy little boys? Check.

I totally concur on the whole bathing suit thing, by the way. And, you know, Stephen King IS a literary genius (ah, yes, you reporter-types are groaning).
