Waiting (Im)Patiently

As I write this, on Friday morning, Danielle and I are waiting to find out what our next duty station will be. Danielle has already checked the website 5 or 6 times this morning.

We’re obviously both excited and nervous. It’s basically up to a stranger and some strange system to determine whether we go somewhere we’ve never been before or go back to a place we know, where we have friends.

I wrote a post earlier this year about the process of choosing our list of prospective billets, and, if anything, we’re more conflicted than ever about where we’re going next. In a way, it’s a good thing that someone else gets the final say in where we go.

We submitted our list of preferences about 6 weeks ago, and we were supposed to find out the first week of this month—then it got pushed back a week. I knew that somewhere mysterious decision-making machinery was churning out our future, but I was vague on the details. Did they spin a wheel on a cubicle wall somewhere? Did they throw darts? Roll dice? So Danielle explained the ‘ranking and stacking’ process to me while we ate breakfast, which, sort of, cleared things up.

The ’stacking’ comes first. The detailers look at the pool of people—in this case, about 30 officers—and stack them in groups according to the qualifications they’ve earned. There will be one group of candidates who have earned all the possible qualifications, another of those who have earned all but one, and so on.

Then comes the ‘ranking’ within each stack. For this they look at candidates’ fitness reports and assign a rank to each one. The rankings help determine whether they get their first, second, third … or tenth choice of the billets.

Then comes the Mysterious Detailer Voodoo. Using some combination of practicality and whimsy, they finalize the slate. A few examples: The DOD wants to avoid cross-country moves whenever possible because they’re expensive. The highest ranked people can’t all go to the West Coast. And every billet has to be filled, no matter where it is.

UPDATE: As I was revising this post, Danielle came in to tell me the release of the slate had been postponed for another week. I shouldn’t be surprised. This is the military we’re talking about, after all.

Thank you so much for this information. We have the luck of being at Ft. Benning for the next 4 years (at least as of right now). I have a sister that is awaiting to hear if they are going to cann. her husbands orders due to him being deployed at the moment or not. HURRY AND WAIT is what she is waiting for now. The information about how this works has helped tremendously.
I hope you find out soon. Again, thank you so much for the information!

Waiting for orders is one of the most frustrating parts of being a military spouse. While they have their processes for selecting who goes where it does feel like they play drinking games to pick who goes where.lol. Good luck with “your” orders! The uncertainty is the hardest part!

I am looking to meet new military wives and make new friends. I was married to a Major in the Army, helicopter pilot for almost four years and we split up back in May. We were at FT Campbell while we were together and JL moved me to Alabama to Redstone Arsenal but I dont know anyone here, I can no longer get on base and I have no way of meeting or making new friends. I would like to make new friends and hopeful in the future meet another officer to enjoy in life. I love the military life style and would like to be apart of it again. I hope their are ladies in the clarksville or FT. Campbell area that will help me in meeting and making new friends. You are more than welcome to email me at newsomeaj2@yahoo.com.

I am a christian lady, 40 years old and we did not have any children.

Thank you for stopping by my blog! Moving around a lot is hard, especially when you cannot possibly anticipate where you might be going. You must have a lot of strength…I commend you and your family. My husband and I have gone through the wait of not knowing where you might go with his schooling, but never on your level. I hope you get to go where you want to. :)

Oh my goodness…I’m so there with you all…my husband is an officer as well and he put in for two slots in DC with housing request for Ft Belvoire, VA (currently in Southern CA) only four more months of the deployment and I have no idea if our request will be honored. I have plenty packed boxes, my 10 month old baby in tow and we are staying with family in the midwest OH just so that I could have help with the baby and company while my husband is away. This has been a challenging 8 months with two earthquakes, one tornado a 4 week baby illness, freeway blowout etc. I feel like Dorthy on the Wizard of Oz…I just want to go home…where ever home is going to be. smile Thanks for the process info!
